The Johnston Police Department is honored to partner with the
Autism Project. The Autism
Project is a
unique collaboration of parents, professionals and community members who provide quality
support,
training and programming that is accessible to all for children and adults with an Autism
Spectrum
Disorder. They also support their families and those who work closest with them. It is the
Johnston
Police Department's mission to ensure that encounters with such individuals are recognized
and that
officers are cognizant of their response and techniques when providing service. As a result,
we have
adopted an Autism Contact Form which is attached below, that allows families, friends and
caregivers to
complete and forward to Lieutenant Loffler. Once the form is completed and the information
is
compiled it will be entered into our agency's data base. In doing so, officers responding to
a call will be
alerted prior to their arrival of the individual's disorder, so it is immediately
recognized. The emergency
contact provided on the form may also be contacted to help deescalate any issues that arise,
which is
often a useful resource to ensure a positive outcome. It will also be used if an individual
with a disorder
gets separated or lost. The information can be relayed to other agencies so they are
cognizant of the
disorder if and when the loved one is located. Below you will find a link to the Autism
Project Website
which provides several different resources and assistance as well as the Johnston Police
Departments
Autism Contact Form which can be emailed to dloffler@johnstonpd.com, mailed or dropped off
at
Police Headquarters. As always, the Johnston Police Department prides itself on Working
Together ~
Making a Difference.
